  1. The Empire Before the Quarrel. Before 1763 the thirteen colonies were prosperous, loosely governed provinces of a commercial empire, and most colonists were proud to be British.
  2. The Seven Years' War Changes Everything. Britain's victory in the Seven Years' War left it with an enormous debt and a huge new territory, and the attempt to pay for both triggered the imperial crisis.
  3. Sovereignty, Not Just Taxes. The core dispute was constitutional: whether Parliament had authority over the colonies in all matters, or only in regulating trade of the empire as a whole.
