  1. Why the Allies Turned on Each Other. The Cold War began because the two states left standing in 1945 had incompatible ideas about what security in Europe should look like.
  2. Containment and the Building of Two Blocs. American strategy settled on containment, and in response both sides converted loose spheres of influence into formal, armed blocs.
  3. The Bomb, Deterrence, and Brinkmanship. Nuclear weapons made direct war between the superpowers close to suicidal, which is why the rivalry stayed cold.
  4. Proxy Wars and the Global South. Because the center was frozen by nuclear risk, the real fighting moved to the periphery, where local conflicts got superpower money, weapons, and advisers.
  5. The Home Fronts: Ideology, Spies, and Dissent. The Cold War was fought inside societies as well as between them, through propaganda, surveillance, loyalty tests, and the policing of dissent.
  6. Detente and Why It Fell Apart. From roughly 1969 to 1979 both sides managed the rivalry through negotiation and arms control, then the arrangement collapsed under mutual suspicion.
  7. How It Ended, and What Actually Explains It. The Soviet bloc came apart because reform intended to save the system removed the fear and the force that had held it together.
