What you will learn about Poker Strategy Fundamentals

The 7-day sprint
  1. Position Is Your Cheapest Edge. Acting last on every postflop street lets you make decisions with more information, which makes the same cards worth more in late position than in early position.
  2. Pot Odds and the Break-Even Call. A call is profitable when the chance you win the pot is greater than the price the pot is offering you, expressed as your bet divided by the final pot size.
  3. Thinking in Ranges, Not Hands. You can never know an opponent's exact two cards, so you assign them the whole set of hands they would play the same way and make decisions against that set.
  4. Betting With a Purpose. Every bet should either get worse hands to call or get better hands to fold, and if it does neither, checking is better.
  5. Preflop Aggression and Three-Betting. Raising rather than calling wins pots without a showdown, builds bigger pots when you are ahead, and takes the initiative that makes later streets easier to play.
  6. Bankroll and Tilt Control. Variance means good decisions lose regularly in the short run, so you need enough buy-ins and enough emotional control to keep playing your strategy through losing stretches.
  7. Building a Hand Plan. Before you invest chips, decide how you intend to play the rest of the hand across likely turn and river cards, so each street follows a plan instead of a reflex.
