  1. Where the Right Numbers Come From. Every maintenance number that matters for your car is printed on your car or in your owner's manual, not in a general internet rule.
  2. Tire Pressure, Measured Cold. Set tire pressure to the placard value with a gauge on cold tires, and never to the maximum number molded on the sidewall.
  3. Reading Tread and Wear Patterns. Tread depth tells you when a tire must be replaced, and the shape of the wear tells you what else on the car is wrong.
  4. Engine Oil, Grade and Level. Oil protects the engine only if it is the right viscosity grade and specification, at the right level, changed on your car's interval.
  5. The Rest of the Fluids, Especially Brake Fluid. Coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and washer fluid each have their own correct type, and brake fluid degrades by absorbing water rather than by running out.
  6. Battery Care and a Safe Jump Start. A lead-acid battery gives warning signs before it dies, and jump-starting it safely depends on the order and placement of the clamps.
  7. Signals, Filters, and a Schedule You Keep. Turn everything from days 1 to 6 into a written routine, and learn what the car's own warnings and filters are really telling you.
