The 7-day sprint
- What Composting Actually Is. Composting is managed decomposition: you feed microbes the right mix of food, air, and water so they turn organic waste into stable, crumbly humus.
- Greens, Browns, and the Carbon-Nitrogen Balance. Compost microbes need roughly twenty to thirty parts carbon for every one part nitrogen, which in practice means mixing a lot of dry brown material with your wet green material.
- Choosing Your System. Match the composting method to your space, your waste type, and how much attention you actually want to give it.
- What Goes In and What Stays Out. Most plant matter and paper is fair game; the exclusions exist to avoid smells, pests, disease, and contamination rather than because the material cannot rot.
- Building the Pile: Size, Moisture, and Air. A pile needs enough mass to insulate itself, enough water to be as damp as a wrung-out sponge, and enough coarse structure to let air reach the middle.
- Turning, Temperature, and Troubleshooting. Turning reintroduces oxygen and moves cool outer material into the hot center, and the pile's smell, feel, and temperature tell you exactly what it needs.
- Curing, Harvesting, and Using Compost. Compost is ready when it is dark, crumbly, cool, and smells of earth with no recognizable food left, and it should then cure for a few weeks before it goes on plants.
