What you will learn about Film Analysis for Casual Viewers

The 7-day sprint
  1. Story Versus Telling. A film has a story and a way of telling it, and analysis lives almost entirely in the telling.
  2. What Is Inside The Frame. The frame is a box with edges, and meaning comes from what is placed inside it, where, and what is deliberately left out.
  3. The Camera Has A Point Of View. Shot size, angle, and movement control your emotional distance from a character and how much power they seem to have.
  4. Cuts Build Meaning. Editing controls what you know, when you know it, and how fast the scene breathes, and two images side by side create an idea neither one contains.
  5. Light And Color Set The Terms. Lighting and color decide the mood before a single line is spoken, and both usually follow a rule the film sets for itself.
  6. Sound Does Half The Work. Sound divides into what exists in the story world and what only you can hear, and films manipulate that line to steer your feelings.
  7. From Noticing To Arguing. An analysis is a claim about what a film is doing, supported by specific choices in specific scenes.
